THE WATER-PURIFICATION BICYCLE – A HUMAN DIMENSION PROJECT shown AT THE WORLD SKILLS IN ABU DHABI 2017

The 11 candidates competing in the industrial mechanics at the World Skills held in Abu Dhabi had as a mission to build a bicycle able to purify water, basically using pedal power.

The main objective of this project was to evaluate the best candidates in the industrial mechanics category but also carried a human dimension.

The 11 bicycles were destined to developing countries where much of the population is deprived of running water.

The bicycle can pump, filter and store water from any available source.
The operation of the water purification bicycle is as follows:
  • Park the bicycle beside a muddy river.
  • Put the intake hose in the water and attach the bicycle to its support.
  • Keep the rear wheel above the ground.
  • Begin to pedal as to prime and activate the pump.
  • Water is forced through a filter before being stocked in a container of your choice.
Craig Brazil from Sheridan College in Ontario is the innovator of the water-purification bicycle concept.
